8th Shanghai Jing’An International Sculpture Project

Patrick unveiled his latest commissioned work at the 2024 Shanghai Jing’an International Sculpture Project (JISP), taking place until December 31, 2024.

Murphy’s work will be exhibited alongside 34 sculptures from international artists, transforming Shangai into an interactive sculptural park for contemporary art. Patrick is one of only three British artists commissioned to take part by the Chinese curators.

Patricks artistic practice is defined by his use of familiar objects in new contexts to explore themes of identity, place, and community. His “Belonging” project, which centers on the notion of cultural and individual belonging within an urban space, has been evolved for this Shanghai showcase, reflecting on the complexities of modern city life and the connections between people and their environments.

Murphy’s reputation as an international artist has been solidified through numerous global public art installations in recent years, including his iconic “Sentiment d’appartenance” installation in Le Havre, France, where 200 life-size seagull sculptures transformed the facade of the UNESCO awarded City Hall.

His work has been featured in various major cultural events across the UK, Europe, and beyond, and is included in prestigious public and private collections worldwide.

‘This ongoing series of bird sculptures continues my exploration of how we exist within our surroundings and what belonging truly means in ever-evolving cities’ said Patrick. ‘It’s wonderful to be able to show my work on the global stage, I’m grateful to have had my sculptures installed in countries such as France, Canada, Belgium, The United Arab Emirates, USA and now China.’

Curated by UCCA Lab, this exhibition seeks to foster global cultural exchange by encouraging audiences to engage with art, urban life, and the interplay between people and their environments.

The 2024 JISP, themed “Echoes Among Us,” featured 22 newly commissioned works specifically for the festival, including Murphy’s, and aims to establish a dialogue between art, the urban environment, and its residents. Sculptures will be installed throughout Shanghai’s Jing’an District, at locations like Jing’an Sculpture Park, Jing An Kerry Centre, and HKRI Taikoo Hui, transforming public spaces into temporary art hubs.
